You know, last night I was sitting in front of this computer eating lettuce out of a bag.
Who the hell eats luttuce out of a bag? I mean, it was one of those packages of iceberg lettuce with the shredded carrots and red lettucey stuff that lazy bums use these days as a substitute for real salad.
But that still doesn't answer my question. What kinda of lazy bum eats lettuce out of a bag while typing messages on a message board? WHy lettuce? Why not carrots or pretzels or some form of intelligent food. Lettuce isn't even really food, if you think about it. It's nothing but water and a little chlorophyll with some cell walls to keep it rigid. It has little minerals, vitamins, calories, fiber, or whatever else. Maybe a little water to keep you hydrated, but that's it.
I now know why people eat lettuce as an excuse to diet without going on a starvation diet. It's simply an alternative version of the starvation diet. Lettuce is nothing but a means for denial. But it tastes good on chicken sandwiches with tomatoes and cheese and onions.
That said, lettuce from a bag is a heck of a lot better than the stuff you buy in heads. They keep spraying that with fertilizer and pesticides and God knows what else until it tastes all chemically and gross. The stuff from the bag is sweeter and doesn't taste like its been chlorinated. They claim bagged food is always more processed and less natural, but I think somewhere in the course of it they de-chemicalize it and it tastes better.
Heck that was out of the blue. But I had to get it off my chest...

You eat lettuce out of a bag. My mom uses that stuff in soup.
And yes, people eat lettuce to fool their bodies into thinking that they've eaten something when they really haven't. Carrots, while they have a little more substance, are used the same way. I do enjoy both of them though.
You're supposed to wash the lettuce, silly! And yes, the lettuce in a bag tastes sweeter because it is washed. However, if you really want sweet lettuce, you'll have to grow it yourself. Which I've heard can sometimes be a little difficult.

Minion Ryou, I have to wonder where you find all of these websites. I'm beginning to believe that you have a link for everything...
In any case, Asuka already understands the art of growing vegetables. It goes like so:
1. Put seeds in dirt 2. Sit back and watch them grow. Feed with Miracle Gro every so often 3. Start yelling at plants when they don't grow fast enough. Produces a lot of CO2 *nods* 4. Pick vegetables
Simple, isn't it?

I believe Minion Ryou is simply bored very often and thus has lots of ime to find random websites! It's a fun hobby!
Y'know, that'd work. Only I don't like the Miracle-Gro part because I don't like chemicals on my food. Number three amuses me. XD

Yeah, I do get bored often... but that's when I make millions of websites that I'll never actually put online... or go Gaia-ing... and stuff... It was really easy, I typed in 'lettuce' on google and clicked on the first link... ^.~ EDIT: and I think it's a little more complicated... don't you have to read to the plant... or something? I read it some where... i don't remember where though... you're supposed to talk to plants... hmm..., edit...again: ask.yahoo.com/20030129.html a site that explains it...

Salad is good. You've ... got to read to plants? Oh no! I've never read to my plants! They must have grown wrong and now they will be troubled and angsty! Angsty plants are a tragedy! I do listen to music often, so maybe this will save them. It is also all kinds of music. Oh, I hope I haven't messed up!

It's not so much about reading as just talking in general. Plants need CO2 to photosynthesize, and a byproduct of photosynthesis is O2, or oxygen. Since we breathe in air, remove the oxygen, and breathe out air rich in carbon dioxide, we help renew the air for the plants to use for more photosynthesis.
Of course, that said, one person talking to one plant doesn't do anything at all - the oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse so much into the air that the difference is negligible. So in the end, talking to your plants doesn't do much unless you've got a million people talking to a dense rainforest or something... and even then, it would be pretty minimal. o.0

but what if those millions of people were talking to one plant, there would be an effect...I don't know how'd they all fit there.. but if they could I'm sure there would be an effect

if the millions of people were in a room talking to one plant, they're all suffocate because they'd run out of oxygen to breathe -.- it might help the plant, but it'd be pretty bad for them. The plant wouldn't be able to produce oxygen fast enough to replace that which the people were consuming...
of course, if they were outdoors, they wouldn't die - but then the issue of diffusion would come up again.

I'm not talking about the people surviving, I'm talking about the growth of a plant...and I"m sure the room would be big enough and there'd be windows...or something... this was part of the article from the site before: Dear Squirrel: It turns out that there may be some truth to the belief that talking to plants helps them grow, but not for the reasons you may think. According to ScienceNet, plants need carbon dioxide to grow, and when you talk to a plant, you breath on it, giving it an extra infusion of CO2. However, for this to have any real effect on your favorite fern, you would have to spend several hours a day conversing with it in close quarters. Why Squirrels want to grow lettuce is beyond me... I didn't even know they could type..

I know about photosynthesis, the people would suffocate, it wouldn't have much affect, I know all of this! I was just joking, yeesh.
So whispering sweet nothings to your plant would help it to grow? And would that make it fall in love with you? Because that would be kind of creepy, if you had a random plant in your house that was in love with you.

No, Redheaded Being, whispering to it will not help. Nor will it fall in love with you. However, it will produce plenty of nice, fresh oxygen for you to inhale.
Oh, and Minion Ryou? I wouldn't trust any article that's addressed to a squirrel. Doesn't seem quite... normal... or reliable.

I don't want a plant to fall in love with me! Like I said, that'd be weird. However, I do like the idea of oxygen since I do rather like to breathe once in awhile. Just once in awhile.
Hey, there's nothing wrong with squirrels.

Ah! A lettuce rant! I agree with Redheaded Being. I wouldn't want a plant to fall in love with me! yuck.... My dog goes nuts when he sees a squirrel..... but don't all dogs? And Asuka? Why were you eatting lettuce out of a bag?!!!! I won't eat lettuce unless there is salad dressing on it or in a sandwich. So is a plant like a tree?

Yes, well, it is lettuce. It deserves good ranting.
Umm... plants are... plants, and therefore their idea of love is probably quite different than ours.
I eat lettuce out of a bag because... I just was. Dunno.
And uhh... trees are plants o.0

Lettuce is just... lettuce. It's there, I eat it now and then, and, as made apparent by this thread, I at one point in time sat infront of my computer eating a bag of it.
Chlorophyll = your friend
